We're especially thankful to Margaret Lawless for setting this up. Margaret is 19 years old and has been volunteering at Buen Pastor since last year. She's from the suburbs of Philadelphia and will be attending Swarthmore College next year as a Sophomore.
Buen Pastor is now partnering with Givology to provide school uniforms for the girls at Buen Pastor. If you would like to pitch in, just go to the profile page and donate as little or as much as you like. Once the uniform project is fully-funded, Givology will transfers the funds to Buen Pastor who will then buy next year's school uniforms.

It’s been nearly a year since Katie Clancy started teaching art classes at Buen Pastor. When a friend introduced her to the work at Buen Pastor, she started dreaming, and dreaming big. She began creating an art curriculum for girls and then sold her own photographs to use as start-up funds for the initial art class at Buen Pastor last January 2010. Since then, she’s taught visual storytelling. She’s explored identity and relationships with the girls using self portraits & portraits. Now, she’s teaching surrealism and storytelling. Katie wants the girls to know that anything is possible when delving into play. Surrealism removes limitations of reality, where one can form their own reality. Starting from here: anything is possible. Katie’s goal is to bring a network of artists under the umbrella of storytelling, to help the girls create their own empowering tools of play and limitless possibilities. You can follow Katie’s progress at her delightful and educational blog, eStudio473. The Muskoka Foundation utilizes modern day explorers to do good as they travel around the world visiting developing communities. One of these explorers, Eric V. Ibarra of Las Fotos Project, spent last week with five girls from Buen Pastor teaching them photography basics. Each day after school, Eric provided a lesson in photography. After the instruction, the girls and Eric explored Guanajuato with a keen eye and a camera lens. Every girl took over 100 photographs each day. After the shoot, the group would meet back at Buen Pastor to evaluate the images and select favorites. It was fantastic seeing their enthusiasm and their talent grow throughout the week. On Saturday evening, November 13th, the girls showed their top five photographs at Antik in Plazuela Baratillo. The group sold 6 prints, totaling $300 pesos. The following day, friends and family of Buen Pastor's new photographers were invited for a showing. The girl's images were hung along the main entrance of the internado and received countless compliments from their families and fellow classmates. It was an emotional show, full of happiness, pride and joy. Buen Pastor thanks Eric V. Ibarra for reaching out to us and helping these five girls develop their eye to what is beautiful and widen their horizons in the empowering world of photography. Thank you Muskoka Foundation for six new gorgeous cameras and a printer. We'll put all of it to good use! You can see the girls photographs at Las Fotos Project Facebook. The Rotary Club of Ashland Oregon stopped by Buen Pastor earlier this week to deliver some great news: they've awarded Buen Pastor $6000 USD! We'll be using the money for educational purposes. $300 has been specified to build the library collection. Ashland, Oregon, is Guanajuato's Sister City. Buen Pastor has been very fortunate to have developed a relationship with our Rotarian friends there. Eric V. Ibarra, the instructor of the Muskoka Foundation photography program, arrived this Wednesday. Five girls have been selected to participate, and Madre Lourdes will be joining them as she’s always wanted to know more about photography. Madre Elvira asked Eric if she could take part as well. How can he refuse Madre Elvira? Katie is back and in a new studio with a 10 week workshop for the girls. This time, she's working with the smaller set. On Tuesdays, she is busy creating with the 2nd and 3rd graders. On Wednesdays, it's time for the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to get inventive. The goal of the workshop is to use existing pieces of Surrealist art to construct personal stories based on those paintings. To read more of this fabulous endeavor and follow the progress, please go to Katie's website, eStudio473. Week 1 of The Adobe Youth Voices Project was a big success on all counts. The girls created a Value Tree and then participated in a photo scavenger hunt. For details, see class notes at the Buen Pastor Adobe Youth Voices website. Adobe Youth Voices joins eStudio473 this week to deepen the girls' exploration in multimedia storytelling. One of our volunteer educators, Rebeca Beeman, has created a video and a blog to kick things off. The video introduces AYV at Buen Pastor and the blog will provide ongoing commentary on the girls' progress. Adobe Youth Voices joins eStudio 473 to foster cutting edge digital storytelling to the girls at Buen Pastor. The project begins when the girls get back from Spring Break and finishes the end of May. Every week will build on the last. We will be introducing the girls to photography, story telling, production, video, audio and helping them build a multimedia project with their newly acquired skills. Read more about our first session here. At the moment, the three facilitators, Rebeca, Juanita and Katie, are all learning the ways of working mixed media magic with Adobe Premier Elements. After learning these techniques and establishing a curriculum, they will work with the willing participants of eStudio 473 to produce Buen Pastor's own mixed media story! We hope to share our final product with our community and possibly other cities across the globe. We've put together a donation list. Feel free to contribute!
Over the past 10 weeks, the secundarias have been taking a Visual Journaling Workshop. Under the guidance of Katie Clancy of eStudio 473, they have learned about basic elements of design, drawing techniques and are currently diving into color theory. Every session begins with an exploration of memories, dreams, love, respect, and important relationships through writing exercises. To inspire their work, the girls have studied influential artists such as Dan Eldon, Lynda Barry, Robert Frank and Peter Shank. In the coming weeks, the girls will start the second workshop, Retratos: Identidad y Relaciones. They'll develop both self portraits and portraits of the important female figures in their lives as they study the work of Joseph Cornell, Chuck Close and Ida Applebroog. Using the techniques inspired by one or more of these artists, they will create a group project as well their own individual works of art. The end goal is to exhibit the girls final projects. We're all looking forward to the art the girls will produce. |
