For three weeks in July, five young ladies and one guy laboriously painted, weeded, planted grass, artfully placed mulch, and transformed the girls’ playground. They even painted a basketball court. Unbelievable! What’s more: not only did they volunteer their time, they spent their own money on supplies. The girls are going to love coming back to this in September!

All the madres were so impressed by the self-initiative these volunteers came with. Madre Lourdes told me this is a remarkable example of spirited service. The volunteers would come and work all day and then stayed with Mexican families when they weren’t doing good things at Buen Pastor. I hope they had a wonderful experience in Guanajuato. I also hope they know how much the madres appreciate what they did. This is truly amazing.

Another school year has come to an end. Before the girls left home for the summer, the secundarias hosted an art show in the hall. Visitors came to see the projects they had worked on with Katie of eStudio473. Some of the girls were able to sell their photographs and art pieces. We also enjoyed a visit our friends in San Miguel who brought pizza, cake, a clown wig & nose. Clowns, you say? Yes, clowns! The girls had fun dressing up and being silly, almost as much as one of the visitors. Before the girls left, Madre Lourdes held a reunion with the parents. She played a slideshow of everyone who had been a part of Buen Pastor during the year. It certainly takes a community to raise a child, and we're lucky to have so many people who volunteer their time and donate their money to help us grow. Every parent stood in front of the room, and one by one, expressed their gratitude for having Buen Pastor love and nurture their daughter. It was a pretty special ending to another spectacular year. |
