Friday's book luncheon was a success! Thanks to the fine ladies of San Miguel de Allende, we now have twenty older girl's books and seventeen younger girl's books in our collection paid for with the donations received. Plans are now in the making to design and build a bookshelf to house the library in the learning lab so that the girls and volunteers have easy access to them. A warm thank you to the people who helped pull this off... you know who you are!

In the past few months, we've added four new computers and one used computer to the learning lab. This coming week, we'll be adding two more new computers, thanks to a gift from the Ashland Rotary Club. Fernando has installed educational programs on the computers in the areas of mathematics, typing, learning English, and brain teasers. He plans on installing more programs on the themes of history, the environment, and geography. This past week, Fernando and Tere worked together to create a schedule. Setting a structure for the girls has been extremely helpful in making sure everyone gets a turn to work on the programs. Isang, our volunteer, has been coming during computer time to help the girls and monitor the lab. We look forward to building this program. We certainly feel it's off to a good start! Our Lady of Lourdes is recognized February 11th. And so is our Lady Lourdes, Madre Lourdes. This week, Madre Lourdes has been receiving all sorts of special attention due to her Patron Saint's Day. On the 11th, the girls put on a show and Madre Berta made a spectacular lemon dessert. On Saturday, the Madres will be continuing the celebration in Santa Rosa. If you want to be celebrated on your Saint's day, you can search for Saint by Cause here. Ana, a University of Texas at Austin student, is completing her internship for her Masters in Social Work. Ana has been working on a grant that aims to provide solutions and education surrounding domestic violence in Guanajuato. This project aligns with her concentration in Community and Administrative Leadership (CAL). On a more micro level, she volunteers at Buen Pastor, working with three of the little girls that need a lot of one on one. She’ll be with us until mid-June and it’s going to be hard to let her go. We're happy to report that Buen Pastor has been awarded $1000 by the DoJiggy Giving Program ! Some of the funds will go to support Lori's work with acupuncture and the rest will continue building our fledgling computer lab and library. Thanks DoJiggy for supporting our educational efforts at Buen Pastor! Think of all the homework 27 girls generate. It's certainly more than one computer can accommodate. Thanks to a generous donation of $1000, Fernando was able to purchase two new computers and two new excellent quality monitors from a Cyber Cafe. He installed the computers this week delighting everyone with a real chance to finish their homework! Arco Iris is a group of Mexican, American, and Canadian women who have been helping underprivileged children in Guanajuato for the past 21 years. Every Thursday, members of Arco Iris come to Buen Pastor to provide three hours of sewing classes with the women in the shelter. The items the women sew are sold at sales in the jardin three or four times a year. The money made goes to the women when they leave the shelter to set up their new homes. Arco Iris is paying for one woman who was at the shelter 7 years ago to go to computer school. In 2009, they sponsored the school tuition of a child of a former resident at the shelter. In addition, they host a Christmas party every year for the children at the shelter and continue to donate money for milk and food for the girls at the internado. Buen Pastor is very lucky to have these dedicated women share their time, energy, money and compassion with them! |
