Arco Iris is a group of Mexican, American, and Canadian women who have been helping underprivileged children in Guanajuato for the past 21 years. Every Thursday, members of Arco Iris come to Buen Pastor to provide three hours of sewing classes with the women in the shelter. The items the women sew are sold at sales in the jardin three or four times a year. The money made goes to the women when they leave the shelter to set up their new homes. Arco Iris is paying for one woman who was at the shelter 7 years ago to go to computer school. In 2009, they sponsored the school tuition of a child of a former resident at the shelter. In addition, they host a Christmas party every year for the children at the shelter and continue to donate money for milk and food for the girls at the internado. Buen Pastor is very lucky to have these dedicated women share their time, energy, money and compassion with them!

Cynthia Stadler is a Nurse Midwife from Norwich, Vermont. Cynthia has been volunteering at Buen Pastor since September 2009. She started with the women in the shelter, offering breast exams and teaching a health class. She has designed a women’s health curriculum in Spanish that she offers in three locations, one of them at Buen Pastor. Just recently, the madres asked her to work with the girls. She’ll be offering them a modified health class which will cover topics such as anatomy, menustration, drugs, violence, nutrition, exercise, sexuality, contraception, and relationships! Through her physical, dental, and vision exams, she’s identified girls that require glasses and cavities that need removing. Given her compassion and her skill set, she’s been a great gift to the women and girls at Buen Pastor. Ann Marie stopped by to visit the girls today. Everyone is always so happy to see her. Ann Marie first came to Buen Pastor last August when she decided to improve her Spanish and volunteer with children. She learned more with the girls during her four months of volunteer work than at any other place or time in her life. Buen Pastor was a life changing experience for her. Ann Marie says that now she has thirty sisters. |
